Spawning Shrimp
If there is one thing a bonefish cannot resist, it’s a shrimp. The truth is that shrimp are the primary food source for these fish. In our flats box, we carry shrimp patterns in a whole range of sizes, colors and weights. This particular pattern calls for substantial body weight and a comparatively slim profile. This allows the fly to sink quickly into the strike zone when fish are cruising just off ledges and drops, or through tidal currents. Often, this variation of the spawning shrimp is tied with EP materials, but I’m here to tell you that it is OK to tie with substitutes! We’ll cover substituting materials in a later post, but for now just trust me when I say, ‘sometimes close is close enough.
